Internal Family Systems therapy for the patterns insight alone hasn’t reached
Not just talking about your patterns — a structured way of actually changing your relationship to them.
You have probably done some work already. Years of therapy, maybe. Books, podcasts, meditation or self-help practices that help until they don’t. You can name your patterns — you can see it happening, sometimes even while it’s happening… but cannot seem to make any headway with changing the patterns.
It just keeps happening.
Most people arrive at IFS not because they don’t understand themselves, but because they have understood themselves for a long time and noticed that understanding and insight alone hasn’t changed things for them.
IFS is an evidence-based treatment that has an ever-growing body of research, and has become a popular and respected approach for addressing trauma, anxiety, and the kind of stuck relational patterns that ordinary talk therapy tends to circle without ever quite entering.
- The aftermath of trauma
- Anxiety and constant worry
- Depression that has been hard to shift
- Relational patterns that keep repeating
- Emotional reactions that feel out of proportion
- Understanding that never quite became change
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that works with the mind as a natural system of parts — protective parts and the vulnerable parts they protect — organized around a calm, compassionate core the model calls Self. It is a different kind of knowing: you are not a single self with problems, but an inter-connected system of parts, each with its own perspective, its own history, its own reason for showing up the way it does.
The work is not to eliminate those parts. It is to turn toward them — slowly, with curiosity rather than correction, with compassion instead of condemnation, with calm instead of chaos — and find out what they are doing, and why, and help them release the burdens they have been carrying. When a part feels genuinely heard for the first time, by something more grounded inside you than you knew was there, it stops needing to do the job alone.
That grounded something is Self — the calm, curious, and compassionate core that lives underneath all the protective layers you have developed throughout life to keep you safe. Most people are surprised to find it is already there, and has always been there, beneath all the layers of parts covering it up.
The IFS Parts Assessment below can help you see which parts are most active in your system right now.
What sessions look like
Both in-person and virtual formats work for this kind of work — the depth doesn’t depend on being in the same room.
IFS asks you to notice what is happening internally, building a mindful awareness of the thoughts, feelings, sensations, and impulses within. With this awareness, you learn to separate your sense of Self from your parts. With this sense of separation, a new relationship between your sense of Self and your parts begins to form. It is through this relationship that healing, growth, and transformation arise.
Slow is fast — when we try to force the system to change, parts resist and push back. Making the process as slow as it needs to be is, paradoxically, often the fastest way to lasting healing.
My experience is that the pace of the work can be uncertain. Sometimes it works like a charm, and “the shift moment” happens as soon as the system is understood. Other times it takes slow, patient effort — being very intentional about respecting all the boundaries, known or unknown, within your inner system, so the work never overwhelms your inner ecosystem.
My role in the process is not to analyze you or hand you insights from the outside. It is to help you turn toward your own internal experience — to ask questions you wouldn’t have thought to ask, to slow down at the right moments, to name what a part might be carrying without telling you what to do with it. The work happens in your relationship with your own system. I am the guide for that, not the source of it.
When the nervous system needs to settle first
Sometimes parts work doesn’t land well — not because anything is wrong with the approach, but because the nervous system is too activated or shut down to do relational work with itself yet. This is where neurofeedback becomes useful in a way most IFS practitioners can’t offer.
Infra-low frequency neurofeedback or amplitude-based brain training can help create the physiological conditions where the nervous system is more calm, alert, and regulated to where IFS becomes more easily accessible. If that turns out to be relevant for you, it can run alongside the therapy work or precede it. You can also do IFS on its own. Many clients do.
What changes
People who do this work for a while describe something that is less about the new skills they learn and more about a different, more harmonious relationship to themselves. Situations and conversations that would previously derail you now start to feel more navigable — not because you have suppressed anything, but because you are less activated, overwhelmed, and alone inside them. Old reactions soften because the parts doing the reacting are no longer carrying the whole load by themselves, automatically and effortfully. The internal weather calms and a new foundation is discovered.
A note from Joshua
In the years I have been doing IFS therapy, I have found myself saying that I am teaching people a new language. This language lets you see and understand things about your inner life that were invisible to you before — not because you weren’t paying attention, but because the words for them didn’t exist… because you didn’t have the system to access, understand, and organize what is happening internally and what it means. Once you have the words, things come into focus in a way I have not seen any other talk therapy reach.

Take the IFS assessment
Before booking a call, you might find it useful to see which types of parts are most active in your system right now. I developed an IFS Parts Assessment that produces a personalized map of the types of parts that commonly show up in the inner work — which ones protect, which ones react, and what they might be carrying.
